چکیده

We present a semiclassical analysis for the electric dipole absorption of electromagnetic radiation by small metallic particles, in the case where the electron motion is diffusive. We find that there are two contributions to the one-body effective potential: the ‘static’ potential makes a dominant contribution to the absorption coefficient below the frequency ωc = D/a2, and the ‘dynamic’ potential is dominant for frequencies ω ≫ ωc (here D is the diffusion constant, and a the size of the particle). Remarkably, these two contributions sum to give exactly the classical absorption coefficient for all frequencies.

Absorption of Energy at a Metallic Surface Due to a Normal Electric Field

The effect of an oscillating electric field normal to a metallic surface may be described by an effective potential. This induced potential is calculated using semiclassical variants of the random phase approximation (RPA). Results are obtained for both ballistic and diffusive electron motion, and for two and three dimensional systems. The potential induced within the surface causes absorption ...

Magnetic dipole absorption of radiation in small conducting particles

We give a theoretical treatment of magnetic dipole absorption of electromagnetic radiation in small conducting particles, at photon energies which are large compared to the single-particle level spacing, and small compared to the plasma frequency. We discuss both diffusive and ballistic electron dynamics for particles of arbitrary shape. The conductivity becomes non-local when the frequency is ...

We introduce a theory for the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by small metal particles, which generalises the random phase approximation by incorporating both electric and magnetic dipole absorption within a unified self-consistent scheme. We demonstrate the equivalence of the new approach to a superficially dissimilar perturbative approach. We show how to obtain solutions to the self-c...

A Computer Modeling of Mie-Scattering by Spherical Droplets Within the Atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...

The radiation reaction effects in the BMT model of spinning charge and the radiation polarization phenomenon

The effect of radiation polarization (RP) attended with the motion of spinning charge in the magnetic field could be viewed through the classical theory of selfinteraction. The quantum expression for the polarization time follows from semiclassical relation TQED ∼ ~ c/μBω c , and needs quantum explanation neither for the orbit nor for the spin motion. In our approach the polarization emerges as...
